Mardi Glow brings Mardi Gras to downtown Lake Worth Beach
New Orleans-style parade down Lake Avenue's sidewalks kicks off latest South J Street block party Feb. 13, with cajun food, music and, of course, masks and beads
A New Orleans-style, neon-fused Mardi Gras bash is coming to Lake Worth Beach.
Masks, music, cajun cuisine, bead throwing, king cake, a parade led by a marching band — it’s all part of the Mardi Glow J Street Block Party on Feb. 13, bringing a piece of the Big Easy to downtown L-Dub.
“We’re bringing Mardi Gras to Lake Worth Beach with a little twist of electronica jam bands,’’ said organizer Jon Jordan, who hosted a successful Halloween block party on South J Street last fall.
The festivities kick off at 5 p.m. with a free Mardi Glow kickoff party at the Cultural Plaza in collaboration with the return of the city’s rebranded Sunset on the Avenue event (formerly Evening on the Avenue.)
The plaza will serve as the starting point at 6 p.m. for the March to Mardi Glow, with the Lake Worth Community High School marching band leading two groups as they head west on both sidewalks along Lake Avenue.
The procession will end at South J Street at the Mardi Glow gates. Tickets are required for entrance, $10 in advance or $15 at the gate. (Kids 12 and under get in free before 8 p.m. with an adult.)
The high school band, to support its yearlong fundraising efforts, will sell light-up bracelets, wands and other glow accessories. And when you purchase Mardi Glow tickets online, you can also make a donation to the school band.
While the Halloween block party was free, a ticket model with an affordable fee is necessary to help sponsors offset the event costs, including more than 10 bands and performers, Jordan said.
The goal is to create a sustainable formula to make Mardi Glow an annual event and to allow for more block parties during the year.
He’s expecting at least 1,000 on Feb. 13. The party will be confined to a roughly half-block section of South J Street, from Lake Avenue to the alley by Common Grounds Coffee.
And it promises to buzz like Bourbon Street with an electronica twist.
Among the bands: the electronic funk band Guavatron, reggae favorites The People Upstairs and the Rockin’ Jake Band led by harmonica-blowing bluesman Jake Jacobs offering Louisiana-style blues.
Chef Tom Tannozzini of Tom’s Louisiana Kitchen will serve up cajun classics and offer cooking demonstrations on the street outside the popular restaurant Pomona.
Also on tap: Glow and fire dance performances by Girl On Fire and a Mardi Gras costume contest, with winning prizes from Lotus Star Salon & Laser by Nicole.
Ray Carbone and Jordan will serve as emcees.
