Lake Worth Beach delays drafting letter of immigration concerns
Mayor cites failure to confirm accusations by Latino residents: ‘We all know bad things are happening but without verification it puts us in a very bad position’
Lake Worth Beach city commissioners have backed off — for now — writing a letter of concern to immigration agencies about how their policies are affecting city residents.
The decision was met with disappointment from more than 50 protesters who rallied outside City Hall Tuesday night, urging leaders to protect Latino residents, an hour before the City Commission was scheduled to discuss the letter.
A formal discussion never happened because the letter was the last item on the agenda. Commissioner Chris McVoy’s request at the start of the meeting to move the discussion to the front of the agenda was denied. Nearly five hours later, the letter was the only item commissioners didn’t get to because of a rule that commission meetings end at 11 p.m.
But it was briefly discussed a few minutes into the meeting, which started at 6 p.m., when Commissioner Anthony Segrich asked whether the formal discussion should be removed from the agenda in light of an email Resch shared with commissioners earlier Tuesday.
