‘It’s going to affect everything,’ a city commissioner says about millions in projected revenue losses that could lead to cuts in public services and programs
As a homeowner in LWB since ‘97 who has enjoyed the beach, the parades, events at Bryant Park and rec baseball when my kids were much younger, I could not vote for what is on its face a really stupid idea. If you want to tear down government for and by the people to replace it with government over the people, by all means vote for this trash legislation.
I fear that this will pass because people will be short sighted and assume that there will be no difference in services or don't really understand what "services" means. They have listened to anti taxers talk about "waste" with no real understanding of what that means either. I can only assume that it will pass and then they will learn. There is no more waste in government work than in any other large business. It's the old "fool around and find out" thing. You are going to find out for sure.
Not to mention that housing prices will rise to make up for the difference, so if you're in the market for a new home (not hunkered down in the home you already own), the savings will be nil. This is not attractive for young and growing families. Hopefully people will understand the second- and third-order effects of such a plan...
I think the Commission is wise to anticipate passage of this propsal. Neighbors may need to step up and love each other a little more. And I believe if Tallahassee really wanted to offer homeowners much needed relief, they would fix the outrageous wind insurance rates.
I’ve read comments from other local elected officials who say they wish the legislature would have some something to reduce insurance costs instead of trying to eliminate property taxes.

Will be interested to hear what commissioners say if and when it comes time to make cuts.
