Lake Worth Playhouse’s Stonzek Theater hosts “Flyway: A Conservation Cinema Series” fundraiser for Audubon Everglades
CALLING ALL BIRDERS! Get ready to migrate to the Lake Worth Playhouse’s Stonzek Theater on Thursday.
Two endangered birds are the stars of separate short films in the “Flyway: A Conservation Cinema Series” benefiting the Audubon Everglades Avian Conservation Fund.
“Tracking Kites” follows local conservationists tracking Swallow-tailed Kites on their 10,000-mile migration to protect their declining populations. Produced and directed by Palm Beach County Environmental Resources Management, the 20-minute film features stunning aerial footage of the migratory raptors in the Loxahatchee Slough and Cypress Creek natural areas in northern Palm Beach County.
“The Little Brown Bird” documents the Florida Grasshopper Sparrow, America’s most endangered songbird with fewer than 200 remaining in the wild. Produced by WildPath and Cornell Lab, the 33-minute film follows efforts to protect the species and its dry prairie habitat in the Everglades.
A post-screening panel discussion will feature the filmmakers and representatives from ERM, Avian Research and Conservation Institute, WildPath and the Palm Beach Zoo.
“A bird like the Swallow-tailed Kite that relies not just on the breeding grounds in Florida but also their wintering grounds in Brazil and also their stopover sites in the Yucatan Peninsula and the flyaways throughout all of Central America, they really act as an indicator species,’’ said ERM’s Benji Studt, who directed the film.
“If we can help recover their population during the rapid development that’s been going on for the past 20 years, that gives me hope.’’
